ConnectOcean leads and supports conservation initiatives that protect Costa Rica’s coastal and marine ecosystems. Our work focuses on establishing Community Managed Conservation Areas (CMCA)—locally driven, science-informed zones that ensure long-term sustainability for both nature and people.

Partnership Spotlight: Fundación MarViva
ConnectOcean proudly integrates Fundación MarViva’s marine species classification system into our Citizen Science efforts. This tool helps divers and local fishers identify whether a species is vulnerable (Red), sensitive (Yellow), or sustainable (Green), promoting responsible interaction and catch practices during dives and fishing activities.
By using MarViva’s criteria on every dive and fishing trip—especially during our Ocean to Table program—we collect high-value data on species health, abundance, and sustainability. This information not only contributes to MarViva’s larger conservation goals, but also directly informs local fisheries management and marine protected area planning.
Together with MarViva, we are building a bridge between citizen participation and regional policy change—proving that everyday divers and fishers can play a powerful role in marine science and sustainability.
